Poe Caverns is a natural wonder located in the heart of the Shenandoah valley, nesteled between between the famous Blue Ridge and Massanutten Mountain ranges in Northern Virginia.
Our story begins with discovery of the cavern by a local developer, Lewin I. Poe in the early 1950's. Prior to this, just 20 feet underground, lay dormant for over 300 million years, a natural wonder like no other. Thousands of stalagtites, some almost 30 feet long, soda straws, popcorn, flowstone, cave pearls, crystals and dozens of other fascinating cave formations line the inner walls.
After discovering this natural gem, Mr. Poe built a small cabin just above the cave. This original cabin is still in existence and now serves as the cave entrance and museum. Several of Mr Poe's artifacts have been found including arrows guiding him out out of the cave, nails embedded into the limestone where strategically placed gas lamps lit his way as he explored new chambers, and even an old steel pipe that was used to pump cool air from inside the cave to the cabin in the hot summer months.
Come walk in Mr. Poe's footsteps and explore this unique experience that you will never forget!
