Our Story

For almost 20 years, Owner Matthew Bement has been making a wide range of wine from different grape varieties and regions all over the World.    He recalls thinking "wine has been made for thousands of years and with limited equipment, how difficult can it be?"  He fermented his first batch of 30 bottles from pure grape juice and has been hooked ever since.  


As Matthew developed his wine making skills over the years he realized that his true passion is to share his knowledge and experience of wine making with others.  He has mentored hundreds of "Wine Lovers" and hosted numerous wine making classes and wine tastings throughout the World, including in Washington DC, Nepal, Brazil, Germany, and even Baghdad, Iraq.


Always dreaming of operating a Bed and Breakfast, tailored specifically to fellow lovers of wine, Matthew has been in search of the perfect venue to share his craft and incorporate wine making classes, wine tastings, wine storage, and other private events.  After years of looking, some luck, some digging, some climbing, some building, and lots of passion, he found it!  Grotto Vino Farm and Poe Cavern.
